The Wine
Domaine des Herbauges is a lovely estate in the Loire’s ‘magic triangle’, between the Atlantic Ocean, the Loire estuary and Lake Grandlieu. Established in 1864 and run by 4th generation winemaker Jêrome Choblet, the domaine is famous for top quality Muscadet and other classic Loire whites. But their rosé is superb too. This is made from Grolleau Gris grapes that are gently fermented under cool temperatures. The result is a pale-hued rosé that looks like the classic pinks of southern France. But it’s a little more tropical with intense summer fruit aromas and classic minerality. And at 8.5% alcohol, it’s also a lot lighter than many pink styles. So, it’s a perfect lunchtime tipple alongside steamed mussels or other simple seafood dishes.
